Title: Are you ready for the biggest change to Email Marketing in Decades?
Description:
Happy New Year to you all! Hope you had a lovely break and managed to get a bit of downtime.
Now I had planned to start the New Year with a little predictions video. I'd even got it all planned and knew what I wanted to talk about. Then I was hit with a barrage of comms reminding me that the Marketing World forgets Feb 01st at its peril. I had to pivot and make this extremely exciting video about email authentication instead! Aren't you lucky!
So the main point is this - back end of last year, Google and Yahoo (not affiliated in anyway to each other) both released statements saying that they would be combatting email spam and phishing even more stringently in 2024.
Good news for us personally. Slight pain in the back-side for us as Marketers. But we're moral people that only want the best for the world so its a small price to pay, adding this task to our to-do lists.
Now the astute of you may ask, 'Alastair does this only affect B2C businesses?' The answer is probably yes. Few in the B2B space will be emailing Yahoo or Gmail accounst... HOWEVER...
When two giants of the industry do something like this, the world sits up and I believe this signifies the start of other providers of email services following suit.
When you also delve under the bonnet and look at whats being asked of us here, it makes a lot of sense for the world at large and helps to save our inboxes. That can only be a good thing right!
Hopefully this will begin to get rid of those persistent, "Hi Ben, Can you go and buy me an Amazon Voucher and send it to me at ... Alastair Banks CEO" type emails!
Action:
While you're more than welcome to do your own research into this subject to get your head around the intracacies of DNS records and email authentication, be warned - it's is incredibly dull! 😂
My recommendation would be to understand the top line (this video). Maybe read the excellent blog by Matt at Optix and then make your way swiftly to the IT department to ask them whether your domain is DMARC'd at the moment and if not, when can it be done.
Take a screen shot of the image I used in the video if you need to.
If you're comitted to getting the best deliverability rates for your marketing campaigns this year this is not something you can avoid in the B2C space and B2B won't be too far behind.
Here are some other resources you might like to look at:
DMARC Record Checker (remember that green doesn't necessarily mean its fully setup)
Google's Sender Guidelines
Yahoo's Sender Guidelines
How to add a DMARC record (from Google)
Postmaster Tools (for tracking SPAM rates etc to Gmail accounts)
Next Video Due - 26th January - Keep an eye out for it
In this section I'll be updating it with my favourite marketing tools. Each time I review a tool I'll be sure to make recommendations on how I believe this could fit within B2B and B2C businesses.
Over time I create slide decks, toolkits and whitepapers which will become automatically available to the membership.
If you miss the fornightly video you can always access the back catalogue from here.
As a member of this exclusive group you have access to both my courses. Any future courses will also be made available to the group.
